The Sterling was an attempt by Austin Rover to return to the U.S. Market. The Sterling was based heavily on the Honda-Acura Legend. Unlike the Legend, the Sterling was plagued by poor reliability and reviews. For 1989 a larger 2.7 litre engine replaced the 2.5 litre, creating the 827 model (prior to the 825). In Europe several versions of the Sterling were sold as the Rover 800 sedan. The Sterling would continue in the U.S. for another year before pulling out forever.
